Image Magick

So it turns out mobile Safari can’t handle compressed gif’s.

Me and a coworker spent last week developing a mobile app for Safari. It was fun. I had a chance to learn the iUI iPhone framework from Joe Hewitt. It’s a nice little framework and I would recommend it to anyone. It’s a little buggy on the sliding animation (probably due to memory or processor limitations) but everything else is very sharp.

Through the course of our labors, we struggled to get the blinking star to indicate the room location on the map. We were using image magick to provide this functionality. It worked fine on the desktop in Safari but not in Mobile Safari. Out of desperation we tried leaving in the LZW compression, instead of removing it like we had been. Voila! That was the trick.

As a side note, I’ve just been informed that our boss wants to expand on our ideas and turn it into a full blown project. So we will be updating the group study room scheduler to have an SMS, mobile and desktop interface. I love my job!
