My needs in a custom built home would be very different from his. But his approach applies – don’t take the realtors advice at face value, find a builder who respects your budget, over-wire and then over-wire some more.

If I get the chance to build my own home someday, I’m going to be studying his site in earnest. Well done and well documented.

For Christmas, I designed a letterpress Christmas card. I love the tactile beauty that comes with letterpress. I created a card that would be meaningful as well as beautiful, to share my love of the Christmas season.

Using the lyrics of one of my favorite Christmas hymns, Silent Night, I composed a Christmas tree with a star on top. During the design phase, I experimented with several different styles of stars. When I sent the artwork to Bjorn Press in Provo, I forgot to remove the discarded concepts from the artwork. This resulted in all of the stars being layered on top of one another. This was disappointing. But they were printed so nicely and on such nice paper that we decided to send them to our family and friends anyway.

Merry Christmas!

I had the distinct pleasure of creating the logo and website for the Foothills Jazz Quartet.

I attended one of their gigs in Farmington. It was a fun-filled event and the music was great!

The logo captures the energetic fun-loving nature of the group while still conveying their reliable and quality sound. The site enables them to announce upcoming events, share audio files and promote themselves to fan and venue managers. They have quite a few shows in the next few months and I hear there are more in the works.

If you’re in the frozen north, some hot jazz is just the thing to warm you up!

This The Rise of the New Groupthink by Susan Cain in the New York Times explores our wholesale adoption of team collaboration at the expense of nearly all independent effort. It is an interesting article and I find myself identifying with the introverts mentioned in the article.

Fortunately, she doesn’t recommend a complete abandon of team work. She suggests that we reign in our open floor plans; ensure that there is space for private, independent work; and give the Steve Wozniak‘s of the world the extra time and space to do their best work.

And doughnuts help, too.

Hannah gave the girls a quilt for Christmas. Well, she gave them the promise of a quilt. She wanted to not just give them a quilt but the opportunity to make it together with her.

But we didn’t want the girls to be empty handed come Christmas morning. So I made a coupon as a token of the promise Mommy made. To give it class we printed it on metallic paper. We used the Silhouette Cameo to cut it out, including a perforated edge for tearing off the coupon.

It was a fun way to give a truly meaningful gift.

A while ago, I posted an article about design standards. As an example I included an image of an apple icon that I made using the Tango Desktop Icon guidelines. I had a good experience following those guidelines and still think of the Tango Icon Library first whenever I need an icon.

To show my appreciation for this great project, I’m providing the vector format of the apple icon free and open-source It should probably be provided in SVG format but unfortunately, I don’t have the time to do that. If anyone does, feel free to convert it. If you do, I’d love to post an SVG copy here too. I’m releasing this under a GPL license.
